Mikyx reportedly close to joining G2 Esports

G2 Esports may have signed Mihael “mikyx” Mehle to their 2019 LEC lineup, according to VPESports. The signing signals the official beginning of G2’s offseason.

Mikyx was one of the best support free agents on the European market. Although Misfits Gaming failed to return to the World Championship in 2018, the support showcased excellent team fighting ability, and his laning was top-notch. His team communication skills were initially lacking, as he was a facilitator type. However, throughout the season and after a brief stint on Misfits’ bench, he tremendously improved on that front.

The team may not need him to be a communicator, as they would either use the savvy Petter “Hjärnan” Freyschuss or, according to rumors, experienced leader Luka “PerkZ” Perkovic. ESPN Esports’ Jacob Wolf noted that PerkZ may swap lanes to accommodate for the arrival of Rasmus “Caps” Winther. As it stands, he would be a clear upgrade over Kim “Wadid” Bae-in, who played a similar role.

G2 Esports has two assets it could offload should the latter happen. Hjärnan and Wadid would be without a team for 2019 should they not find suitors in free agency. The matter is even more dire as top teams have already filled (or have almost completed) their rosters. Should they seek suitors, they may have to part ways to do so, as several rosters have locked in bot laners. In the meantime, the two players have contracts running through 2019, making them low-risk signings.

Update: Nov. 29 @ 18:35 — Mikyx has officially joined G2 Esports, and PerkZ is moving to the bot lane. As a result, Wadid has joined Rogue. However, Hjärnan’s fate remains uncertain.
