SK Telecom T1 sign Mata, complete LCK lineup

SK Telecom T1 sign Mata, complete LCK lineup

SK Telecom T1 have won the Cho “Mata” Se-hyeong sweepstakes as they hired the player for 2019. The team revealed the news on social media, completing one of the best signing sprees in LCK history.

The news ends SKT T1’s offseason with a bang as they complete their rebuilding process. Their roster, a who’s who of proven and rising talent, has clear upside and may contend in the LCK and the World Championship. As there were several moves at once, it is easier to see the end result as follows:

Faker, Leo and Effort were the team’s first signings, but they were not enough on their own. The arrivals of Clid, Haru, Khan and Teddy greatly improved the roster, and Mata is the missing piece in a squad that needed top-level experience.

Speaking of Mata, he has made a name for himself as a member of teams that competed against SKT T1. In 2014, as a member of Samsung Galaxy White, he was SKT T1’s harbinger of doom, beating them wherever they played. The matter eventually amounted to SKT T1 missing Worlds on home soil, and to Samsung White lifting the trophy.

Since then, he played on several teams in China and in the LCK. His time on Royal Never Give Up alongside Jian “Uzi” Zi-hao ended when SKT T1 eliminated them from the 2016 World Championship. Later on, he joined KT Rolster’s super team and contended for the LCK crown, but he didn’t meet the same success internationally. KT lost in the 2018 Worlds quarterfinals to World Champions Invictus Gaming 3-2, and they didn’t reach Worlds in 2017.

SK Telecom T1 also announced the arrival of assistant coach Kim “Fly” Sang-chul from Jin Air. However, they bid farewell to ex-players and assistant coaches PoohManDu and Bengi. PoohManDu is looking for offers from other teams, and Bengi is preparing for his military service.
